Haiti - Social : Demonstration and funeral of Professor Louis Jean Philbert

The funeral of Professor Louis Jean Philbert, who had been fatally shot last October 8, by a tear gas shell fired at close range by police while attending a demonstration by teachers demanding among other things, education for all Haitian children, were sung in the Church of God of the street Martin Luther King this Friday in Port-au-Prince have been followed by a demonstration.

Originally scheduled on the court from the Faculty of Ethnology (FF) of the State University of Haiti (UEH), the funeral of Professor Philbert have faced a ban of deanship. Jean Yves Blot, vice-dean of the FE says regrettable that those responsible have not been contacted in time and considers this a lack of respect for the deceased. Indicating that the premises ae closed following clashes between students.

Funeral attendees were then organized a demonstration demanding justice for the relatives of the teacher union. Barricades of burning tires were erected along the route leading to the Ministry of Education. Ziliani Louis, the mother of the deceased, also attended the event and pledged to fight for justice and reparation.

Joshua Mérilien, the coordinator of the Union Nationale des Normaliens Haïtiens (UNNOH), fingered the Haitian authorities he holds responsible for the deaths, calling it murder, of his former comrade in struggle. He vowed that the death of Professor Philbert will not back coalition of organizations involved in the struggle for universal education.
