Haiti - Elections : For greater youth participation

At the pproach of parliamentary elections on August 9, the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) and its partners of UN agencies including the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) continue massive awareness with an emphasis on youth.

Thus, a series of training in electoral participation has been launched this week for a first group of 140 young people from all departments.

Through this activity, the first group of 140 young people was equipped, to train their peers and encourage them to be actively engaged throughout the electoral process. The CEP has insisted on the fact that the active involvement in this historic process is evidence of "active citizenship".

This training was built around the essential points for promoting the participation of young people who represent one of the majority demographic entities of the country : Young and electoral awareness, democracy and the importance of elections (culture of peace, non-violence, civic education); how to vote? Election and Electoral Decree, electoral corruption.

Richardson Dumel, the CEP Communications Director, stressed the urgent need for young people to put their words, with the power of their vote, while reassuring that every vote will be counted in order to reflect the sovereign will of the Haitian people "the Provisional Electoral Council gives the guarantee to young people and all Haitians that the process will be seamless because the necessary measures have been taken to this effect. Every vote will be taken into account and the popular will be respected. We invite all young people to participate and vote in droves to decide at the same time the direction of the country for the coming years."

Katyna Argueta, the acting Senior Director of the UNDP, said that youth is a major component in the political life in Haiti. Passionate, bubbling but also demanding, Haitian youth represents over 50% of the total population, so it must be prominent in the electoral process in Haiti "Given its demographic weight, Haiti Youth must position as real players in free elections, democratic, inclusive and transparentfor the consolidation of a genuine rule of law."

Representing over 50% of the population of potential voters, young people can create the future of Haiti through its elections.
