Haiti - Elections : The OAS aware of concerns

Ambassador Albert Ramdin, Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS) has responded [to Washington] to concerns about the credibility of the elections to be held in Haiti on November 28.

"The OAS and Caribbean Community (CARICOM) have mounted the largest election observation mission ever. Concerns were expressed about the ability to hold its elections in Haiti, as well as transparency and credibility of the electoral process", noted the Secretary-General who emphasized that the decision to go ahead with the elections was taken by the Haitian government in accordance with constitutional arrangement "These elections have been held by Haiti and its own Provisional Electoral Council (CEP). The international community provides the technical support required, but it is the Haitians themselves who are responsible for holding these elections. ".

As for fears that the elections are neither transparent nor credible, Ramdin responded by saying that "The OAS is aware of concerns expressed by political parties and candidates" However, we he was encouraged by "the current efforts of CEP and education work done through the dissemination of information to the public". He also welcomed the decision by several political parties and some candidates, review their positions to boycott the elections, and agree to participate in the electoral process.

Finally, the Secretary-General considers that the presence of the observer mission joint OAS / CARICOM throughout the electoral process, contribute to credible elections. The OAS said that the main objective is to have a peaceful election campaign and the distribution of identity cards by the National Identification Office (ONI). Recalling everything must be done to mobilize and sensitize the people on the lists so they can recover their identity cards before the election.
