Haiti - Humanitarian : 14,6 million euros assistance of the European Union

The service of the European Commission to the Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection (ECHO) ll provide 14.6 million euros of humanitarian assistance to the most vulnerable Haitians by the end of 2015.

This new funding will allow ECHO and its partners on the ground to strengthen the response to the cholera epidemic, to continue to accompany Haitians who remain displaced since January 2010; to enhance preparedness of Haitian to recurring natural hazards and improve the food security of the most vulnerable.

"[...] Strengthen the capacity of the most vulnerable families to withstand shocks is essential if the ultimate objective is that humanitarian assistance is no longer needed in the country," said Segolene de Beco, ECHO Head of Office in Haiti.

5 million to fight against cholera :

While cholera contamination had continuously decreased since 2010, the incidence has tripled in one year when 16,000 new cases were recorded since the beginning of 2015 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-14030-haiti-health-increase-of-306-of-cholera-cases.html The rainy season could worsen the number of transmissions, justifies the voluntarist programs funded by the European Union to the tune of 5 million Euros for 1.7 million Haitians.

4 million assistance to IDPs :

Five years after the 2010 earthquake, 64.680 Haitians remain in one of 66 IDP camps where access to water and basic services remains inadequate. A new allocation of almost 4 million euros aims, through rent subsidies, to facilitate the moving of people still displaced in new homes and support their access to new professional activities.

3 million Euros to prepare for recurring natural hazards :

Strengthening preparedness capacities for natural disasters, such as hurricanes, floods, droughts and landslides, is a major challenge for Haiti. Since 1998, ECHO has allocated over €32 million in the development of national strategies of Risk Management through its DIPECHO program. ECHO and its partners will continue to strengthen the capacity of resilience of the most vulnerable households to natural hazards through the implementation of management plans and deploying prevention systems.

2.6 million to improve the food security of the most vulnerable :

The food security of many Haitians will be another major area of activity of ECHO and its partners, to provide assistance to nearly 600,000 people in food risk situation and particularly to the people of the Northeast and Northwest of the country, areas affected by drought. https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-14067-haiti-agriculture-food-crisis-risk-in-4-departments.html

Note that since the 2010 earthquake, the EU has mobilized €332 million in humanitarian aid for Haiti. The implementing partners of the Humanitarian Aid Department of the European Commission (ECHO) are the UN agencies, international NGOs and the Red Cross movement.
