Haiti - Insecurity : A member of Caritas killed

A collaborator of Caritas Switzerland has been shot dead in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Kénord Julien, 27, cashed a check in the amount of US$2000 on behalf of Caritas at a bank in Port-au-Prince. After his stint at the bank, he sat in his car and was shot by a unknown. Shortly after, the employee of Caritas was succumbing to his injuries in hospital, said on Tuesday, Gregory Praz, spokesman of the NGO. "This is probably a heinous crime [...] Port-au-Prince is a mecca of international arms trafficking and thousands of weapons circulating in the city", said Gregory Praz.

Caritas Switzerland regrets the loss of her, dear and loyal colleague. Despite this terrible event, Caritas will continue its commitment of several tens of years in Haiti. Since the earthquake of January, Caritas is helping children and families in distress and helps them survive. Caritas is also beginning the reconstruction of 1,700 houses in the area of the epicenter, in Gressier, west of Port-au-Prince.

A police investigation was opened.
