Haiti - Environment : End of mission of a Haitian delegation in Guadeloupe

Friday ended the mission of a Haitian delegation, on a study trip in Guadeloupe since 19 May.

This mission led by Maximilien Pardo, Representative for Haiti at United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Yves Renard, UNEP Representative in St. Lucia, allowed members of the Haitian delegation, to exchange with the managers of protected areas of Guadeloupe in order to install among others of marine protected areas on the Haitian coast.

Meetings but also field trips were an opportunity for fruitful exchanges with among others: the Directorate of the sea, the Conservatoire du Littoral, the National Forestry Office, the Agency for Marine Protected Areas, the SPAW Regional Activity Centre and the Regional Marine Fisheries Committee...

During the study tour, several themes were addressed including :

  • The management of coastal and marine protected areas (management plans, taking account of popular knowledge and practices in the planning and formulation of management plans...) ;

  • Marine Protected Areas and Local Development (development opportunities (eco) tourism compatible with the conservation and sustainable use, management and impacts of tourism, practical examples of risk management by ecosystems...) ;

  • The Planning and Management Tools (mapping and information systems, information, awareness and education, marking, signage and other zoning and demarcation instruments) ;

  • Institutional montages (management regimes, involving of managing institutions, participation and representation of users, sectors and trades).

After the Guadeloupe, the Haitian delegation will visit St. Lucia, to learn from other experiences.
