Haiti - Elections : Update on the electoral process

The Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) yesterday met with candidates and political parties involved in the electoral process to the point. Gaillot Dorsinvil, president of the CEP, said he was satisfied with the meeting, noting that others will follow.

He stressed that "the CEP is not solely responsible for the electoral process and that success of the elections also depends of parties and candidates". renewing the commitment of the CEP to respect the rules of the game, he calls on candidates and parties to do the same and work together to make elections a true success.

Pierre Louis Opont, the Director General of CEP, confirmed that "the CEP has the necessary funds to organize the November ballot and that the deficit of $2.5 million on the $29 million required had been reduced to 1 million through a contribution of $1.5 million from Japan. He indicated that the sensitive material had already been commissioned and non-sensitive materials will arrive on October 31.

In addition, the director of the CEP announced that Venezuela has made available to the institution, 30 vehicles for the election period and that mobile units could be installed in the IDP camps to facilitate their participation in elections . He recalled than 40,000 employees working in these elections and that the CEP was in its final phase of recruitment of this important organisation. The director of the CEP welcomed the number of voters who expressed their intention to participate in the elections of 2010 which according to him is "more important than those who had voted in 2009".
