Haiti - Politic : Presentation of the book Haiti NOW

Friday, April 24 at 5:00 pm the Knowledge Foundation and Freedoms (FOKAL) receives at Fokal UNESCO-room, a large delegation of NOW Institute of the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) for the presentation of the book Haiti NOW a book of over 700 pages with various reflections, infographic data and statistics on the country's reality as six major themes: built environment, natural environment, infrastructure, people and culture, government, history, economics. Following its working model on the city of Los Angeles in 2002, NOW Institute team undertakes a reflection on the "interdependence of the city with background, history, culture and politics," a work begun in Haiti in 2012.

"Our hope was to undertake a multifaceted investigation of the history of Haiti, anchored in its revolutionary foundation, and use it to better understand the integrated nature of the present conditions of the Nation," wrote Thom Mayne, founder-President of Now Institute.

Six Haitian intellectuals have written essays in this book : Hervé Sabin, Frédérick Mangonès, Jean W. Weiner, Michèle D. Pierre-Louis, Nadège T. Clitandre and Kesner Pharel.

Excerpts :

Frédérick Mangonès :

"[...] It is obvious that the poor quality of construction in recent years is due to the lack of standards and monitoring of construction methods by state bodies" in "The necessity to organize the profession".

Michèle D. Pierre-Louis :

"[...] The essential conditions for Haiti to face its multiple challenges: social justice for historically marginalized peasants, children and youth education, health and environmental protection, creation of decent jobs, institution building and place of fulfillment for its vibrant culture" in "Haiti, History and Governance".

Kesner Pharel :

"The last of Haiti position in the world ranking of tourism competitiveness is due to the absence of a strong regulatory framework, weak infrastructure and inadequate management of natural resources, cultural and human" in "Haiti : what tourism future?"
