Haiti - Heritage : Tour of the Minister of Culture in the South East

Saturday Dithny Joan Raton, Minister of Culture, accompanied by Patrick Durandis, Director General of the National Heritage Preservation Institute (ISPAN), toured various heritage sites in the Southeast department.

She visited the heritage site of Fort Ogé (communal section of Cap-Rouge), to examine the different types of work to be undertaken for the protection and conservation of the monument. The main interventions envisaged consist of the establishment of a fence protecting the site, a reception center, sanitary blocks, signage, etc... The Minister Raton and Patrick Durandis, also met with young people representing the Social Development Organisation of Fort Ogé (OSODEFO) on the need to protect this heritage. Ms. Raton promised all the support of the Ministry to young volunteers.

Recall that the Fort Ogé was built under the direction of General Magloire, as a defense against a possible return of the French. The name of this military structure evokes Vincent Ogé, one of the figures of the Haitian revolution.

The Minister also visited the former "habitation" of Hannibal Price, a former British soldier installed in Haiti in the eighteenth century with the intent to engage in sugar cane production, he ordered around 1818, to the House Linsay and Company of Liverpool (England) a steam mill, which according to experts, would never served. This equipment, relatively well preserved are visible on the "habitation" site located on the road to Marigot near Jacmel.

Dithny Joan Raton discussed with Patrick Durandis, of the acceleration of revaluation program of always present objects on the plantation including the Mill Price.

The tour of the Minister then conduct here to the Jacmel market "Anba kay fè" built by the workshops of Bruges (Belgium) in 1895, closed for several weeks because of its state of disrepair.

Then she went to the premises of the new building to house the Office of the Ministry in the Department (Commerce Street) and the Interpretation Centre of the Carnival of Jacmel, under construction on the tourist port.

The delegation continued its tour to the Municipal Library where the Minister has assessed, with officials, some of the institution's needs, before holding a working session with some local authorities, to the Town Hall of Jacmel, around the planning of the Feast of the city, May 1st.
