Haiti - Culture : Hervé Telemaque exhibits at the Centre Pompidou in Paris

Hervé Telemaque, French painter and visual artist of Haitian origin whose works are known worldwide, exhibits in a chronological retrospective devoted to him at the National Museum of Modern Art at the Centre Centre in Paris (until May 18, 2015), 74 paintings, drawings, objects, assemblages and collages of its different creative periods. An exhibition to discover !

Born in Port-au-Prince in November 1937, Hervé Télémaque, left Haiti in 1957 to New York, when Duvalier came to power. During his stay in the United States, he discovered the abstract and surrealism reinterpreted by American artists. Since 1959, his painting marks its originality, Hervé Télémaque wants to anchor in reality and escape from abstraction. In 1961, he moved to Paris and participates in the movement of "Narrative Figuration".

In 1968, his creations evolve, in addition to painting, he will make object assemblages, collages and charcoal drawings, related to current events or concerns, such as the situation in Haiti or Africa, voodoo and sexuality. In 1973, he returned for the first time in Haiti to recharge his imagination. He naturalized French in 1985. The 2000s those of a return to African sources which invokes the power of "negritude". In 2010, he sponsored the auction "Haiti Action Artists" whose objective is to restore to the Haitian artists the means to rework and create lasting structures after the earthquake in January of the same year.
