Haiti - Petit-Goâve : Demonstration for the reopening of the Port of Petit-Goâve

Wednesday, for the second consecutive day, hundreds of Small-Goâviens have took the streets, to the call of the "Commission of reflection for the reopening of the port of Petit-Goâve" (KOREPÒ) to demand the immediate reopening of the Port of Petit-Goâve, redeveloped by the current government.

Placards in hand, protesters, close to former Deputy of Petit-Goâve, Me Jacques Stevenson Thimoléon, traveled several neighborhoods of the city and warned the administration Martelly-Paul, against any delay in the opening of the wharf of the city, originally scheduled October 16, 2014 and postponed due to threat of opposition against the Head of State https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-12293-haiti-social-protest-in-petit-goave-against-the-postponement-of-the-inauguration-of-the-wharf.html The protesters demanded the presence of the Head of State, recalling that the port is a source of job creation and social peace.

A strong tension was reported at Jubilée, where unidentified persons threw stones against demonstrators. Those responsible for KOREPÒ, deplored the incident and issued a call for unity to the people of Petit-Goâve, while announcing a new event for this Thursday, January 29th.

In addition, the members of the new political alliance of the opposition, have called for lower fuel prices during a sit-in on National Road #2, the distribution of electrical power 24/24 and the appointment of a new municipal cartel.
