Haiti - Economy : Towards a regulation of fisheries in boundary waters

Tuesday, at the end of a binational meeting held in Pedernales (Dominican Republic), attended by representatives of fishermen's associations, local authorities and representatives of organizations working at the border of the two countries, the authorities Dominicans have returned a boat engine, belonging to Haitian fishermen, which was part of a lot of fishing equipment, seized at the Dominican Navy operation on January 2. https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-12861-haiti-security-violent-clashes-at-the-border.html . At this meeting, which aimed to regulate the activities of fishermen of the two nations on the border line, the local Dominican authorities have proposed among other to Haitian fishermen to fish with hooks rather than with nets that capture indiscriminately of immature fish.

The representatives of the Haitian fishermen took the opportunity to claim restitution of other fishing equipment seized since 2013 by the Dominican coastguard. Dominican officials have responded positively to this request and promised to hand them to the next binational meeting in Pedernales in late January, meeting where it will also be question of granting a license to fishermen.
