Haiti - Security : Uruguay will remove 60% of its troops in Haiti

Monday the Uruguayan Parliament announced that Uruguay would keep its troops in Haiti until 28 February as part of the United Nations peacekeeping mission (Minustah), but that during the rest of 2015, the country will withdraw 60% of its effective in Haiti. This decision was passed in the House of Senators unanimously and was approved in the lower house, said the Uruguayan parliament.

Uruguay, currently has 605 soldiers in the Minustah, this contingent will be reduced to 250 men by 31 December 2015. Under this legislation, to be adopted by the Presidency, the Government of Uruguay "consider as a possibility a withdrawal of all its troops if the circumstances justify it."

Note that José Mujica, President of Uruguay had already stated in November 2013 that it planned to withdraw the Uruguayan troops in Haiti https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-9880-haiti-security-uruguay-reaffirms-its-intention-to-withdraw-its-peacekeepers-from-haiti.html because of "political stagnation factors of Haitian society". Subsequently, José Mujica had asserted that the return of the Uruguayan army was subject to coordination with the other countries of the Minustah and the United Nations.

Recall that in October, the United Nations Security Council renewed the mandate of the Minustah for a year, but decided to halve the number of military https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-12285-haiti-security-the-mandate-of-minustah-renewed-for-one-year.html
