Haiti - Politic : High Tension in Petit-Goâve

On Wednesday, the city of Petit-Goâve experienced another day of demonstrations, tensions and violent clashes between members of the local branch of the opposition and supporters of the local authorities.

Several Groups of Joint Front for the Liberation of the opposition (Rezo pitit pep, Fanmi Lavalas, Commandante...) took to the streets to demand the departure of the Mayor of Petit-Goâve, Sandra Jules, whom they accuse of embezzlement of public funds. Many Lavalas participated in this demonstration. Barricades of burning tires were set on the National Road #2 forcing motorists to use the streets of the city.

Protesters chanted hostile words to President Martelly, Prime Lamothe, the député Thimoléon and Mayor Sandra Jules... have closed the doors of several public offices in the city such as the DGI, the Office of Public Works, OFATMA, the Dinepa where they broken equipment. They also lowered the flag of the Peace Court and the Office of Finance.

Then they headed to City Hall where they have attempted to break unsuccessfully rejected mercilessly by security agents and supporters of the Mayor. Both sides have then clashed with violence with shot stone throwing, several shots were heard according to witnesses.

Reacting to misbehavior, Sandra Jules asked the Government Commissioner to immediately use the public action against members of the opposition who have closed public offices and threw stones against the Town Hall, saying "I will not resign, the opposition should wait for the elections."
