Haiti - Humanitarian : Taiwan donated 1,000 tons of rice

Wednesday, Ambassador of Republic of China (Taiwan) in Haiti, Tsai Chiu-Hwang, proceeded with the presentation of a donation of one thousand tons of rice (1000), to the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour (MAST), represented by its Minister Charles Jean Jacques. The ceremony was held at the local of Overseas Engineering & Construction Corp. LTDA. S.A (OECC), a Taiwanese construction firm located on the airport road, working for over 10 years in Haiti.

In his speech the Ambassador declaredThe ceremony that brings us together today testifies of the excellent friendship and cooperation relationship between Haiti and Taiwan. This is a donation of one thousand (1,000) tonnes of husked rice offered by the Government of Taiwan to provide support to social projects of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour of the sister Republic of Haiti."

Considering that food insecurity has always been a serious issue for the poor, the diplomat has placed particular emphasis on the desire of the Taiwanese people to meet the needs of the poor in Haiti. "This donation is consisting of 50 containers, for a total of 33,000 bags of rice that arrived in Port-au-Prince," stating that customs clearance, logistics, warehouse and distribution are supported by the MAST.

In his remarks for the occasion, Minister Charles Jean Jacques sent on behalf of the Administration Martelly / Lamothe, words of thanks to the Taiwanese government. He put the emphasis on the positive and concrete results of this bilateral cooperation, which is likely, in his view to help the Haitian government to face to the urgently to the challenge of food insecurity in Haiti through social projects implemented by the MAST stating that the donation with a market value of nearly 30 million gourdes, will enable to supply 324 community restaurants throughout the country for almost three months.
