Haiti - Social : International Day for the Abolition of the Slave Trade

Saturday, August 23, the Consulate General of the Republic of Haiti in Suriname, celebrated, with the Federation of Africans in Suriname, "The International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition" which promotes a deep reflection on the transatlantic slaves trade and honors Toussaint Louverture in the iconic uprising on the night of August 22 to 23, 1791, which began in Saint-Domingue (now Haiti and the Dominican Republic) and played a key role in the abolition of the slave trade.

The President of the Federation of Africans in Suriname and the Surinamese officials present took turns expressing their deep gratitude to Haiti who "paved the way for the abolition of the whole transatlantic slave trade and allows them to enjoy an irrevocable freedom today."

The Consul of Haiti in Suriname, Alex Jospitre, accompanied by Vice Consul Rosario Alexandre, for his part, praised the memory of the great Toussaint Louverture and of remarkable Surinamese Maroons Leaders such as: Alabi, Boni, Joli-Cœur et Captain Bross and wished "the commemoration of this historic event helps promote international solidarity against the new forms slavery has shifted into nowadays", before laying a wreath of flowers in front of the "Kwakoe" statue representing a former slave with broken chains.
