In a statement Carnival Corporation, which operates 9cruise brands, announced it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Haiti to develop on Turtle Island [Île de la Tortue], an infrastructure cruise project estimated at $70 million. This will be the second major port project in Haiti, after that of Royal Caribbean in Labadee.

According to David Candib, vice president, development and operations for Carnival Corporation’s Global Port & Destination Development Group this project will be the "largest cruise industry investment ever made in Haiti, providing a new and exciting destination for ship itineraries traveling in the Caribbean."

Although the details of the project are not yet available David Candib said in a statement that the project will employ over 900 people directly and indirectly "We are working together with the Haitian people and government to build Tortuga into popular and economically sustainable Caribbean destinations," stressing "The development will create an exciting opportunity for our guests to enjoy a new, secluded and stunning destination in the island of Tortuga [Île de la Tortue] [...] At the same time, this commitment will initially stimulate significant development and construction activities, and then tourism business once the port is open, that will create a tremendous economic impact for the people of Haiti."

Stressing that it is the largest investment of Carnival Corporation in the Caribbean "The Caribbean is a crucial market for the success of Carnival Corporation and the cruise industry in general and we remain committed to creating new and exciting products in the region."
