Haiti - Social : Blocking of VoIP by Digicel, who is affected ?

Since 17 June 2014 on the 4G network of the company Digicel, all applications (among others: Viber, Skype, Tango, Nimbuzz, MagicJack), which runs on devices using a SIM card are blocked. These same Internet applications are fully functional on all computers and tablets that do not use SIM card.

The shortfall for Digicel is estimated by the company between 500,000 and one million dollars per year, caused by unauthorized providers that offer voice service for free in direct and unfair competition with traditional voice service of the company, by using the bandwidth of the Digicel 4G network, without compensation for financial investments made in its data network.

Note that this problem is not specific to Haiti and that Digicel hopes to find a compromise with these suppliers in order to restore the situation as soon as possible and recover financially , with minimal impact to the consumer.

Note that in several countries following the types of communications (voice, date, etc...), adjustment of rates based on the use is permitted. In addition of cost-sharing agreements have already been established in some countries with large bandwidth consumers such as Youtube for example.
