Haiti - Elections : The National Identification Office deploys its mobile units

In anticipation of the presidential elections of November 28, 2010, a large influx of people has caused congestion in the National Identification Office (Office National d’Identificatio ONI). To cope with this influx, ONI, with the technical support from the Organization of American States (OAS) and the financial support of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), launched a major nationale campaign of registration. To reach people far from urban centers and avoid congestion offices, mobile units were made available to all adults who need to access various services offered by the ONI.

For more than two weeks, more than twenty mobile units were deployed in the metropolitan area of Port au Prince, and the various regions of the country with the resources, necessary equipment and experienced staff. Services such as applications for new registrations, reprinting of lost cards and change of address are provided. Once the cards are issued, these units will return there for the delivery of identification cards.

In parallel with the deployment of mobile units, an extensive awareness campaign was launched with the support of community leaders who carry out volunteer activities to encourage people to proceed immediately to the demand for services. Simultaneously, the radio spots will be broadcast in the media to encourage people to participate actively.

The OAS by its support, renews its commitment to supporting the ONI in this emergency action in order to ensure the participation of all the citizens to the next presidential and legislative elections with the National Identity Card (Carte d’Identification Nationale CIN) in hand.
