Haiti - Economy : Index of Consumer Prices (May 2014)

The General Index of Consumer Prices (Base 100 in August 2004) increased again during the month of May 2014 with a level switching to 215.9.7 against 214.7 in April, or the same monthly increase than last month (+0.6%) and an increase in YOY (3.5%).

This upward monthly variation during the month of May, the result of the upward trend of indices of consumption: "Food, Beverages and Tobacco" (+0.4%), "Apparel, Textiles and Footwear" (1.5%), "Rent Housing, Energy and Water" (1.1%), "Health" (+0.4%) and "Other Goods and Services" (+1.0%).

Among the products that have most influenced the rise of the "Food, Beverages and Tobacco" index include beef (+0.4%), pork (+0.6%) and goat (+0.4%) and chicken (+0.3%), fresh fish (+1.6%), the red herring (0.6%), salt herring (0.9%), milk powder (0.8% ), eggs (+1.3%), avocado (+1.3%), bananas (0.4%), mirliton (+0.7%), green peas (+0.4%), dry peas (+0.2%), yam (+0.5%), the true tree (+0.4%), orange (+0.8%) and lemon (+0.5%).

Note that the increase in "Clothing and Textile Shoes" index comes particularly from higher fabric prices (+1.9%), costume, universal jacket (+1.7%), blouse (+1.7 %), dress (+1.5%), petticoat (+2.0%), panty girdle (+1.7%), t-shirt women (2.1%), making clothes (+1 2%) and sandals (+1.8%).

The increase of +2.4% of "rent housing" index is primarily responsible for the growth of "Rent Housing, Energy and Water" index.

Inflationary pressures in the "Health" index is attributable to prescription glasses (+2.4%) and hospitalization costs (+1.6%).

Finally, the products that contributed most to the increase in the index "Other Goods and Services" are: shampoo (+2.8%), powder toilet (+1.8%), cream the body (+4.5%), other hair care products (+2.8%) and beauty care (+0.7%).

Development and maintenance of housing : 3.6%

Other goods and services : 7.9%

General Price Index by Region (Variation on a month) :

Metropolitan Area: +0.7% (Includes Port-au-Prince, Delmas, Petion-Ville, Carrefour and Croix des Bouquets.)

Rest West: +0.5% (includes departments SouthEast and West excluding the Metropolitan Area)

North: +0.5% (including the departments of North, Northeastern and Northwest)

South: +0.4% (including departments of South Grand Anse and Nippes)

Transversal: +0.6% (including departments of Centre and Artibonite)
