We just learned that the politician and professor Leslie Saint-Roc François Manigat, 43rd President of Haiti from February 1988 to June 1988 died in his home in his sleep confirmed Mirlande Manigat.

Leslie François Manigat, born August 16, 1930 in Port-au-Prince, was Director of Political Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the 1950s; accused of supporting the student strikes of the early 1960s under the regime of François Duvalier, he was imprisoned two months in 1963 before going into exile in France, the United States and Venezuela.

In 1970, Mr. Leslie François Manigat married his second wife Mirlande Hippolyte, a fellow expert in constitutional law.

In 1979 he created the Rally of Progressive National Democrats (RDNP) after the departure of Jean-Claude Duvalier, he ran in the elections scheduled to take place Nov. 29, 1987.

His wife, Mirlande Manigat, was a candidate in the presidential elections of 2010.

The President of the Republic, Michel Martelly said to be dismayed by the disappearance of Mr. Manigat "On behalf of the Government and people of Haiti, I offer my sincere condolences to the family, relatives, friends and supporters of RDNP [...] the Republic has lost one of its worthy son who had the heavy responsibility of occupying the highest office in the State."
