Haiti - Environment : Inauguration of the first Centre for Nature Interpretation in Aquin

Thursday, as part of the World Environment Day, celebrated this year in Haiti on the theme "Klima a ap chanje, nou pa ka kanpe l men nou ka ralanti kous li. M angaje m !", President Michel Martelly, participated in various activities, including in Aquin, to the official inauguration of the first Centre for Nature Interpretation and launched the Campaign of planting of 5 million seedlings in the southern region.

Accompanied by Jean Francois Thomas, Minister of the Environment, the Mayor of the Commune of Aquin, Calixte Bossé, of Deputy Fritz-Gérald Bourjolly (Aquin / St-Louis du Sud), Ambassador of Canada in Port-au-Prince, Gilles Rivard, of Departmental Delegate of South, Serge Chéry, Ms. Sophie de Caen, Director of Program United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and representatives of local organizations, the Head of State first thanked partners such as the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), UNDP and the friends of Haiti including Norway and Canada, for their great contribution to the development of the environment in the department of South before stressed the importance of this inauguration which is a clear signal of the Government regarding the new arrangements made for better management of natural resources and the environment in Haiti, inviting them to the consciousness of all, for a better society.

According to the Minister Thomas, the commemoration of the World Environment Day is a moment of awareness that will lead to global action for the environment. "The main objectives of environmental events will aim, awareness of the Haitian population on environmental issues, promotion of existing initiatives promoting the environmental protection, promotion good practice and new initiatives for the environment"

The Canadian Ambassador Gilles Rivard and Director of UNDP, Sophie de Caen, have pledged their full support to the Haitian Government in its fight for the Environment. On this occasion, two vehicles were presented by Norway to the Departmental Directorate of Environment of the South.

The establishment of the first Centre for Nature Interpretation, will allow to highlight the ecological values ​​of the Hydrographic Unit of Aquin/Saint-Louis du Sud, awareness and sensitize the local population on the importance of natural resources in the area, facilitate the development of eco-tourism, contribute to the protection of natural resources and enhance the knowledge of pupils and students on the importance of ecosystems.
