Haiti - Religion : Cardinal Chibly Langlois, member of a Commission and a Pontifical Council

Thursday, His Holiness Pope Francis Thursday, His Holiness Pope Francis appointed Haitian Cardinal Chibly Langlois (56) member of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America and member of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace.

The Pontifical Commission for Latin America is a member of the Roman Curia founded April 21, 1958 by Pope Pius XII, in union and under the supervision of the Congregation for Bishops. The Commission's mission is to study the problems of Catholic life, the defense of the faith and spreading the doctrine in Latin America. This committee oversees the work, coordinates and supports the Latin American Episcopal Council (CELAM), by order of Pope Paul VI Nov. 30, 1963. This Commission is also responsible for the promotion of relations between the various institutions run by the Church of Rome in Latin America and between the various offices of the Roman Curia.

Composition of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America :

Cardinal Lorenzo Baldisseri, Secretary General of the Synod of Bishops and as members: Cardinal Leopoldo José Brenes Solórzano, Archbishop of Managua (Nicaragua); Ricardo Ezzati Andrello, Archbishop of Santiago (Chile) and the Cardinal Chibly Langlois, Bishop of Les Cayes (Haiti).

The Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, is a part of the Roman Curia dedicated to "studies, action-oriented for the international promotion of justice, peace and human rights from the perspective of the Catholic Church. To this end, it works in cooperation with various awareness institutes, religious groups, and academic organizations, ecumenical and international. This Council has a President assisted by a secretary appointed by the Holy Father for a period of 5 years. Moreover, the Holy Father appointed forty members and consultants who serve in their personal capacity in the Council for that period.

Composition of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace :

Cardinal Leopoldo José Brenes Solórzano, Archbishop of Managua (Nicaragua); Jean Pierre Kutwa, rchbishop of Abidjan (Ivory Coast); Orlando B. Quevedo, Archbishop of Cotabato (Philippines) and Cardinal Chibly Langlois, Bishop of Les Cayes (Haiti).
