Haiti - Security : Flooding in 3 departments

Potentially unstable air caused by high humidity of lower layers of the atmosphere dominates the weather of the Caribbean region in recent days, causing severe rainstorms locally. In conjunction with the Directorate of Civil Protection (DPC) and the Permanent Secretariat of Risk Management (SPGRD), the National Meteorological Center (CNM) has issued a floods, landslides and rockfalls warning.

Municipalities at the level of three departments of the country are already affected by floods caused by heavy rains in particular from 17 to 19 May.

In Artibonite, the flooding of the La Quinte River and Ravine Duration resulted in flooding in Lacroix-Périsse (L'Estère) and in Gros Morne.

A child swept away, was rescued alive, Sunday, May 18 at Gros Morne, thanks to the diligence of a team of municipal civil protection. A man, aged 79, was killed.

In L'Estère, twenty houses were destroyed or damaged in Lacroix-Périsse and damage are also recorded in plantations of Ravine-à-Couleuvre.

In the center, the river of Gascogne flooded hundreds of homes and devastated gardens in the communal section of Desvarieux in Mirebalais. Poultry also died.

In the West, a dozen houses were flooded in Tabarre, without significant impacts. Teams of civil defense helped the population to clean the affected areas.

This weather situation is likely to maintain a cloudy and rainy weather over the country. Wednesday and Thursday : partly cloudy in the morning; cloudy with chance of showers and isolated thunderstorms in the late afternoon or evening.
