Haiti - Humanitarian : Europe gives $2M to Fight Against Cholera

Under the National Action Plan to fight against cholera, Directorate General for Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection of the European Commission (ECHO) [European Community Humanitarian aid Office] has allocated U.S. $ 2 million to the UNICEF to strengthen prevention activities and rapid response to cholera.

"As a humanitarian donor, ECHO's action aims to support access to care for people affected by the disease and to improve access to clean water to cut the transmission of the disease. We want to help get the mortality rate below 1%, by supporting rapid response activities and prevention," declared Nicolas Louis, Head of ECHO office in Haiti.

"Two months before the start of the hurricane season, this contribution will allow UNICEF and its partners to intensify actions on the ground, especially in the highest risk areas. If all these efforts manage to stop the chain of transmission of the disease, many lives will be saved, including those of children," declared Edouard Beigbeder, UNICEF Representative in Haiti.

Note that joint efforts against cholera, have produced encouraging results in recent months. The first quarter of 2014 saw a 75% decrease of suspected cases of cholera and deaths compared to the first quarter of 2013. Despite this progress "Haiti still has the largest number of cases of cholera in the world," said Friday, Jim Yong Kim, the President of the World Bank Group (WBG), when called to renew the commitment of international partners to help Haiti overcome cholera. https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-10930-haiti-cholera-call-to-renew-the-commitment-of-international-partners.html
