Haiti - Tourism : The Creative Industries added to the Ministry of Tourism

As part of last cabinet reshuffle on April 2, the component of "Creative Industries" was added to the name of the Ministry of Tourism, by order of Prime Minister, Laurent Lamothe.

The Ministry notes that the most accepted definition of creative industries has been developed by the United Kingdom in 1998 "These are industries which have their origin in individual creativity, skill and talent of a person and have a high potential growth and employment through the generation and exploitation of intellectual property."

The development of Crafts industry will constitute the main dimension affected by any intervention of Ministry in this area.

This new structure should encourage the development of craft production with three main orientations :

  • Applied research to the production of design likely to promote the diversity and evolution of proposed craft work ;

  • Growth of craft production in all other parts of the country by developing the characteristics of each region ;

  • The supervision of groups of artisans for positioning Haitian Crafts as a trademark of the interior decoration of hotel infrastructure in Haiti.

Furthermore Friday, Stéphanie Balmir Villedrouin, the Minister of Tourism and Creative Industries, hasproceeded with the installation of Ms. Colombe Émilie Gessie Menos to the position as Secretary of State for Tourism. Prior to this position, Ms. Menos was the Director of Public Relations and Promotion in the Ministry of Tourism.

Speaking to the new Secretary of State, the Minister Villedrouin declared "The responsibility you have to take today joins the concept that we created together, the Creative Village https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-10605-haiti-tourism-presentation-of-the-project-craft-village-of-milot.html. It is a craft village of a new type, because it concerns not only the work of artisans, but extends to all their environment taking into account agricultural activities for phasing them the development impelled by tourist activity."

For his part Ms. Menos affirmed "It is with great enthusiasm that I address this new chapter in the life of the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Industries. Madam Minister, I commit myself once again, through hard work and thought leadership to support you in the revitalization of the tourism sector and Creative Industries."
