Haiti - Social : No slow down in illegal immigration attempts

Marine Unit of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force intercepted a boat carrying 114 migrants (94 men and 20 women) from Haiti, indicated Monday the governor's office of ICT.

"It is very sad that illegal immigrants are still putting themselves in peril to try and reach the shores of the Turks and Caicos Islands in this way," declared Turks and Caicos Islands Governor Peter Beckingham said in a statement.

Beckingham declared that the migrants would be processed by immigration officials at a local Detention Centre and returned to Haiti at the earliest opportunity.

"On behalf of the people of the TCI I once again take this opportunity to encourage the Haitian authorities to do all that they can to stop this dangerous and illegal trade [...] It is exacting too high a price in Haitian lives and TCI public spending," indictaed Governor Beckingham, adding "we are in touch with the Haitian authorities about reaching an agreement to a memorandum of understanding, which I hope we can finalize with them soon and which may help to prevent more such incidents." https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-10292-haiti-social-tci-urged-haiti-to-make-more-efforts-to-discourage-illegal-travel.html

Along with this interception, the past week has been busy for the U.S. Coast Guard Station Miami Beach More than 200 migrants were repatriated after attempts of illegal migration. Until Sunday night, the Coast Guard repatriated 88 Cuban migrants, 82 Haitian migrants and 41 Dominicans. The largest rescue was when an overloaded 30-foot sail freighter with 82 Haitians on board was discovered south of Great Inagua, Bahamas, indicated the Coast Guard.
