Haiti - Social : Big crowd in the 142 offices of the National Identification Office

Following the announcement of elections in 2014, is the crowd in the 142 offices of the National Identification Office (ONI) across the country. Of 500 to 600 usual daily demands of National Identity Card (CIN), this number earlier this year doubled and could even triple according to Jean Baptiste St. Cyr, Director at ONI headquarters in Port-au-Prince

Knowing that a citizen without official identity can not participate fully in the economic, political and democratic life, the authorities have adopted new measures to record the maximum number of people in a short time. With a plan to modernize its production capacity and training of its staff.

For this, more than 600 mobile registration kits (computer, fingerprints scanning system and digital photography), are currently deployed throughout the territory and a hundred others were placed in Haitian diplomatic missions, thanks to a funding of $ 48 million of Venezuela. With these technologies, it is possible to register a citizen and issue a CIN in 15 minutes if the name, date, place of birth and physical address of the applicant are correct. Recall that previously the production of CIN was to be done abroad.

The interconnection of offices and the establishment of a data center are also part of this modernization program. According to Jean Baptiste St. Cyr, more than 5.8 million Haitians, slightly more than half of the population in Haiti are already registered in the database of the ONI.
