Haiti - Education: Thousands of students demonstrate in Petit-Goâve

On Monday, several thousand students, from high school and college, marched through the streets of the town of Petit-Goâve. After traveling the city center, the demonstrators have taken the national road #2, forcing motorists to be patient... Public and private schools remained closed.

Launching hostile remarks to the authorities in place, the students carried a little cardboard coffin, which according to them symbolized the death of education in Haiti... Sang mournful hymns and uttering cries of distress and wailing saying "We celebrate the funeral of education..." other explaining "Instead of education, leaders give us the carnival. Instead of paying teachers properly, the President of the Republic preferred to use money from the public treasury to fund the carnival [...] Down the carnival ! [...] Vive education ! Chanted students of Petit-Goâve, who declared "Tuesday 4 and Wednesday 5 February, we will be on the streets !"

Agents of the National Police of Haiti (PNH) and MINUSTAH soldiers have closely followed the demonstrators throughout their route.
