Haiti - Technology : 3D printing makes its entry into Haiti

In Port-au-Prince, Haiti iLab, wants to bring a solution to the recurring lack of objects of first necessity, from 3D printing and thus resolve some of the immediate needs of Haiti.

With its first two 3D printers "Makerbots" iLab Haiti teaches how to model 3D objects, repair and maintain these machines. Working with an American association "KidMob" his first productions are simple objects, disposable as clamps for umbilical cords often lacking in hospitals...

iLab Haiti is currently seeking partnerships with startups such as Filabot specializing in the recycling of plastics of everyday, in filament used in a 3D printer.

Worldwide, 3D printing already allows to create on demand and infinite objects: parts or small daily useful items, cases for phones, decorative or utilitarian objects, kitchen items, jewelry, prototypes, models, toys... Note that custom printing for a single part or small prints is much cheaper with this 3D technology that the production of the same piece from a mold whose cost is generally high.

After the plastic, the democratization of 3D printers capable of producing metal objects have already been announced. Existing models because of their very important price is reserved for an use in industry and aerospace. However, a team of scientists from the University of Michigan working on the design of a 3D printer capable of printing metal parts, intended for the general public at a price of less than $2,000. The prototype already allows to produce high-precision metal parts with alloys of iron, aluminum, manganese, nickel, or even titanium, depending on the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance that is desired.

Imagine tomorrow in Haiti, it will be possible for example to obtain to a mechanic a spare part manufactured on demand, without having to undergo the time of importation. Perspectives and the use of 3D printing are limited only by our imagination. A new revolution is underway in our country.
